Martin qualified from Dundee University in 1981, having been awarded prizes in Dental Prosthetics and as Best Student in Conservative Dentistry. He spent eight years in the hospital dental service undertaking postgraduate study and training in the disciplines of Restorative Dentistry and Oral Surgery, and in 1986 was awarded both his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and his Diploma in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
